Pet Nutrition

A holistic approach offering tools and knowledge for informed feeding decisions

About this service

How we care

Professionally caring for hundreds of pets offers a unique bird’s-eye view — one that can be difficult to see when your experience is naturally centered on the pets in your own home.

Over the years, we've watched far too many animals struggle with chronic illness and disease. Cancer is especially heartbreaking, but it is only part of the picture. Kidney disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, allergies, urinary issues, and other chronic health concerns have become increasingly common in our pets.

Reported pet cancer statistics are sobering:

  • 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer during their lifetime
  • Nearly 1 in 2 dogs over age 10 will develop cancer
  • Approximately 1 in 5 cats will develop cancer

Genetics and chance certainly play a role in health, but they are not the whole story. Just as with our own health, nutrition can have a profound impact on a pet’s overall wellness, resilience, quality of life, and risk factors for chronic disease. Yet navigating pet nutrition has become unnecessarily complicated.

Much of the commercial pet food market is built around products that do not meet human-grade standards. Ingredients that would never be permitted in food intended for people can legally be used in pet food, and highly processed, biologically inappropriate ingredients have become normalized simply because they are common.

Common does not necessarily mean optimal.

The good news is that nutrition is one area where we have meaningful choices. Thoughtful, species-appropriate nutrition can support the body, help manage many chronic health concerns, and potentially reduce or delay some nutrition-related disease risks.

None of us can make our pets live forever. But we can work toward giving them as many healthy years as possible — years with fewer preventable health problems, fewer medications, fewer unnecessary veterinary expenses, and, most importantly, less suffering.

A Better Understanding of What You’re Feeding

Our goal with holistic nutritional consulting is not simply to tell you which food or brand to buy. It is to give you the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions for your own pet.

That means helping you understand:

  • what is actually in your pet’s food
  • how to evaluate ingredients and nutritional quality
  • how nutrition may relate to your pet’s individual health concerns
  • how to navigate conflicting information and marketing within the pet food industry
  • what questions to ask your veterinarian
  • how to make practical nutritional changes that fit your pet and your household

Health Concerns That May Benefit From Nutritional Support

Nutrition can play a significant role in pets experiencing:

  • Obesity
  • Allergies and dermatitis
  • Kidney disease
  • Urinary stones and urinary concerns
  • Gastrointestinal distress
  • Chronic diarrhea or vomiting
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Liver disease
  • And more

Nutritional consulting is intended to complement appropriate veterinary care, particularly when a pet has an existing medical condition. If you have questions about your cat or dog’s diet, are overwhelmed by conflicting food recommendations, or want nutritional support for a specific health concern, we can help!

Because our success isn’t measured by how often your pet needs us. It’s measured by how healthy they stay.

While much of the pet-care industry profits when animals are sick, we thrive when our clients are healthy, happy, and living long, abundant lives.
